In digital art what are complementary colors?

I have been searching the internet for an answer to what complementary colors are but I cant really get a basic answer on any websites. Can anyone give me an example of what complementary colors are?

Red - Green
Yellow - Purple
Blue - Orange

Traditional complementary colours are the same thing as digital colours. Learn by painting a colour wheel of your own, mixing real paint for said colours.
