Thoroughbred as a barrel racer?
I won't race publicly until I find a good quarter horse, but could I practice on my tb mare? She's VERY tall and probably wouldn't be to great at it but... Thanks in advance for your answer.
It would be fine just to practice on her. It's really not so much about the breed as the individual horse. For some reason people seem to think that TBs are great for barrel racing because they are so fast, however there is a big difference between quick and fast. QH's are designed to be shorter and more compact enabling them for quick acceleration and sharp turns. TB' are longer and leaner and are built for power and speed but over longer distances. My TB is fast but it takes him forever to untangle his legs while my arab and my sisters QH can turn on a dime. I'm not saying that all TB's are the same. I've seen plenty of TB's that are built like QH's but in general TB's are not designed for barrel racing and the average TB will not excel. As far as practicing, go for it. I'm sure you and your horse could have a lot of fun and you could probably even do a couple of smaller competitions. Who knows, your horse might be good at it despite her being a TB. Good luck
