Buffalo Hide
Which to raise - Buffalo or Elk?
My boyfriend has an established small cattle farm in Eastern Washington (only 10 head) on 130 acres of cattle fenced property.
Looking in to switching and/or integrating an alternative livestock into the farm and have seen pros and cons of each, but looking to maybe get opinions from those who have tried one or both.
Like the fact the Buffalo are sought after for meat, hides, heads, hooves, tongues etc. And also like that Elk are sought after for meat, hides, horns, mounts, antlers, velvet etc. Especially like the fact that Elk can be put 3 per 1 cow's acreage, whereas I've heard Buffalo are only 1 - 1.5 per cow's acreage.
Any insight would be appreciated!
The only things I can think of is that he will have to get HIGH, strong fencing for elk, which would be darn expensive if he fences in even half of the acreage. I don't know what kind of fencing he's got now, but strong woven wire with a powerful electric wire on top should keep buffalo in. It might have to be a little taller than normal too. It would help to talk to people who raise either of these animals to see what they had to put in and how much it cost.
I believe the most important thing in raising, growing, or making anything is demand. Is there a stronger demand for the products of either of these animals in your general area? It would cost more to ship greater distances. Do more people eat buffalo or elk?
