Excessive writing-nonsense thoughts-a possible sign of the onset of adolescent schizophrenia?
My niece has ADD & OCD. My sister (her aunt) has full blown schizophrenia. My niece has been writing random words on anything she can, including important documents. She cannot stop until the page or blank spaces are filled with words. The words have no relation to each other and do not relate to anything presently going on around her or in her life. they are just a bunch of random words. She is clearly not doodling. Our family is very concerned for her. This strange writing has progressively become worse over the months. Any thoughts?
It's best to treat the symptoms as early as possible. One theoretical premise of schizophrenia is that neural pathways can change the longer the person is untreated and the more likely they will not return to "normal" functioning with each exacerbation of symptoms. Also consider that the worst symptom of ADD is constant rumination over worries - which can make OCD symptoms worse. So it's important to treat both the OCD and ADD to get a better remission of symptoms. In any case it's best to treat the problems as quickly as possible - I'm sure that the symptoms feel horrible for her as well.
