can radon get into carpet or fabric fibers?
we have been storing most of our belongings in a basement where radon is present. can the radon gasses get into things such as mattresses, carpets, and other soft goods?
Radon being an inert gas will not combine with or stay in a carpet or other soft goods. The problem with radon occurs when there is a continuing supply of the gas from soil, building materials and so on. It will build up in the environment of the house to a predictable level. Depending on the source it could be above the acceptable levels or below. If you remove the material from the basement away from the source of the radon it will decay to a non radioactive state within a few days. The danger of radon exposure is generally to the lungs, where it causes localized biological damage to tissue in turn increasing the chances of cancers from prolonged exposures. There are several good sites that deal with radon and it's effects, exposure prevention etc. Any one of these sites should clear up your concerns about radon exposure. Just search radon.
