Medium Weight
What fabric is a medium weight, comfortable, and has a wide weave?
I'm looking for a fabric that is not light but not really heavy (heavy like burlap, I mean), but I want it to be sturdy. I also want to be able to see the weave distinctly. So if you have any ideas what might work best, please let me know!
There are probably many options available at your local fabric store. Onasburg cotton is a slubby woven cotton that might be suitable. It's used by Star Wars jedi cos-players. It's available at most fabric stores in the basic or utility fabric section. There are fabrics that are similar to gauze, but thicker and heavier and will give you the hand-spun hand woven look you want. There are also many fashion fabrics that have a coarser textured weave and they were popular for spring and summer. These fabrics might be on sale now. Also, you might want to look for "aida cloth" a fabric used by cross stitchers. The weave is raised and very visible to aid stitchers who follow elaborate graphed designs. It can be expensive if its pure cotton or pure linen, synthetic is cheaper and it's sometimes called "afghan cloth" or "bread cloth" It's a bit hard to find however, and as i said, it can be expensive. There are some curtain fabrics that have a slubby visible weave and would work for a costume. I think you could find something at any fabric store, look for basics or utility fabrics to find cottons with a coarser weave, and look in the home decorating fabrics for coarse woven curtain fabrics.
