Why don't we raise rabbits for meat large scale?
Yes, they're cute, but also delicious....
Stop and think about it, they may not be big but they reproduce like... well rabbits.... Furthermore, they eat all the things we don't: grass clippings (which they see as ready prepared meals), table scraps (non meat), and whatever else they can get their paws on. Moreover, you could probably stack lots of those hutches in a small space where you could collect fertilizer. Finally, they don't need sunlight (they live underground mostly anyhow).
Also, those pelts have to be good for something....
Is there a reason we don't do it?
critterman51: Agreed, but I hate chickens as animals. They're mean and they peck. Rabbits don't.
CalKing: I guess it's all in how you cook them. I had them a few times and loved it. Personal taste differences?
Because Americans have been conditioned to think of rabbits as cute and chickens as food. When I was a kid the weeds we pulled out of the vegetable garden fed the rabbits we raised to eat. Mama rabbit has 4 to 8 babies every 6 to 12 weeks (depending on breed) and it takes them about 12 weeks to grow out. We have been brainwashed to eat chickens and not rabbits. There is no good reason that we don't eat rabbits.
EDIT: As is the norm on answers, cf failed to read the question. The question asks why we don't raise rabbits on a "large scale" not if we do it at all.
EDIT2: More comments with no knowledge. cal king has obviously NEVER tasted rabbit.
As far as chickens being mean, that is not true. They are very docile animals. Roosters defend their flock and territory, but so do humans and many other creatures. When I was 5 years old my aunt would have me go out into the barnyard and catch the chicken that would be soup that evening. A chicken raised as a pet is just as nice as a rabbit raised as a pet and rabbits kick scratch, and bite.
EDIT3: Contrary to cal king's statement hasenpfeffer is a popular dish and wiki (his reference) is full of biased opinion and false "facts" not truths.
