How do you buy a padparadscha sapphire?
I'm looking into buying a padparadscha sapphire engagement ring, but people seem to be WAY overusing the term. What is the difference between a padparadscha and an orange sapphire? And if it is 'heated' is it still a genuine padparadscha, or am I better off just buying a pink or orange one? How do you keep from getting ripped off when you're shopping for one?
You need to find a high-end fine jewelry designer for this unusual stone. You can try http://www.sozaidesigns.com, who has access to top quality sapphires.
A padparadscha stone is a delicately colored with light to medium tones of pinkish-orange, orangy pink to orange pink hues. A plain orange or a plain pink stone is not considered a padparadscha. The key to the color is that it should be delicate. Some people say that it can have secondary tones of yellow or brown. Others believe that brown should be avoided.
Almost all sapphires today, including padparadscha's are heated. What must be avoided are stones that are "treated".
Pink or orange sapphire's are substantially cheaper. Again, you should make sure, particularly for orange stones, that they are not treated. One trick is to drop the stone in water and see if the color disappears. If it does, it could be treated. If you are getting and expensive stone, you should get a certificate.
