what would be a good way to attach leather handles to a wooden box?
I built a wooden box (12"x12"x24") and need to put leather handles on it (scrap from belts). I was thinking Upholstery Tacks, but I feel that they wouldn't give the leather the strength it needs under the box's weight if filled. The wood is 3/4" clear pine. The box weighs 6-8 pounds and would probably weigh 35 when filled with the objective material. Screws are a no go unless their heads can be covered some how. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

pass through ends of handle.
Cut a strip of leather for each end, lay over formed loop (see above link), and fasten each end (close to formed link) with these:

Maybe put a washer under head of screw post to keep head from pulling through Leather Strip.
