Can I upgrade memory of different sizes?

I currently have 512mb (256 x 2) DDR1 memory with one more slot empty.

Can I add a 1gb or 512mb stick (both the same speed as the current one) in the remaining slot?

Yeah, sure. You may want to try to find one with similar speed, latency and voltage. 2 years ago, I added a kingston stick that was faster than what I had and it was a gig (had 128 in at the time). First, check out how much memory your system can support.
